a dirty word
Experts and consumers in the know say we don't need harsh detergents and chemicals in our shampoos and body washes to maintain cleanliness. Beauty brands that once touted products to leave us 'squeaky clean' are also coming around to this fact. The ‘squeakiness’ comes directly from lathery detergents, such as ammonium lauryl sulfate, that strip essential and natural oils from the skin, hair and scalp. Sound dramatic? For our body, it is. We produce these natural oils to keep us looking and feeling soft and supple; removing these oils chemically is counter to what our body needs to maintain a healthy sebum balance.
Once removed, natural sebum can be replaced with conditioners, body creams and oils – but this can quickly become expensive. Oil reducing or more abrasive skin products might sound attractive if you have over active sebaceous glands, which can cause acne and other skin eruptions, but natural, better treatments whose formulas do not include harsh chemicals and detergents can be just as effective.
To understand the fascinating and diverse function of oils, read our exclusive article Holistic Plant Oils by Caroline Mix or read about Moss, a company that makes oil treatments specifically for acne-prone skin.
