In the last few years the Maca root has risen to fame, reaching North America and gracing the shelves of our local grocery stores, and with good reason.


This nutritionally dense root vegetable, from the Peruvian Andes, is a bonafide superfood. It is a relative of the radish and has an aroma similar to butterscotch. Well known for its ability to enhance strength and endurance, Maca was sacred to the Incas and has been used as a food and medicine in South America for centuries.

The Maca root can be eaten, baked or roasted, prepared as a soup, or used for making a fermented drink called maca chicha. It can also be found in powdered form, and a teaspoon or so can be added to beverages, smoothies, puddings, and raw food recipes to give them a boost. Maca contains large amounts of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and all of the essential amino acids. It is rich in B-vitamins, which provide energy, and is a vegetarian source of B-12. To boot, maca has high levels of bioavailable calcium and magnesium and is great for remineralization.

Maca is a fertility enhancer and is well known for improving libido and sexual function, especially in men. For this reason, it’s earned the nickname “nature’s Viagra.”

Due to an over abundance of environmental estrogens, many people’s hormones are a bit out of whack, a problem Maca root can help balance. It works as an adaptogen, which means that it responds to different bodies’ needs individually. If you’re producing too much of a particular hormone, Maca can help regulate the production downward, while if you’re producing too little, it can regulate the production upward. Maca stimulates and nourishes the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which are the “master glands” of the body.
